What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling refers to taking a short-term, focused approach toward solving a client's concerns whereas psychotherapy is often longer in duration and more in-depth. They both involve conversations designed to facilitate emotional insight, promote personal growth, improve communication skills and support healthy relationships. The process takes place within the context of a mutually respectful relationship between the therapist and the client.

What are the benefits of counselling and psychotherapy?

There are multiple benefits such as insight, understanding, improved relationships with family and friends, increased problem solving skills, a more relaxed lifestyle, higher self confidence, enhanced physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Who uses counselling and/or psychotherapy?

Everyone encounters challenges throughout their lives. It is common to feel overwhelmed at times and it can be a great advantage to have someone to discuss your concerns with, clarify your next steps and discover a happier way of life. Susan's clients include entrepreneurs, investment bankers, artists, students, engineers, administrators, entertainers, lawyers, doctors, scientists, salespeople, actors and many others from all walks of life.

What can I expect in my first session?

In the first session, you will have an opportunity to see what the nature of your sessions will be like by discussing what you'd like to work on and the steps that might be taken to reach your goals. The first session will end by discussing how many sessions it's likely to take and by finding a time and day each week to meet.

How long is each session?

Each session is 50 minutes long.

What is the cancellation policy?

The fee for services is waived if you need to cancel due to an emergency or illness. Otherwise, at least 48-hours notice of cancellation is needed. If less than 48-hours notice is given, Susan will try her best to switch your appointment to another available session time during the same week.

Will I be able to reach my goals quickly?

Depending on what it is you'd like to achieve, many clients find that they are able to make lasting changes in a relatively short period of time (i.e. 6 to 12 sessions depending on the situation).

Are services covered under OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan)?

Unfortunately, psychological services are not covered under OHIP.

Are services covered under extended health insurance?

Susan's services are covered by most extended health insurance plans. Please check your individual plan to determine what your coverage is. Fees are payable at the end of each session and submitted by you to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

What is the cost?

Fees are charged at a rate within industry standards of $160 per session.

Will what I say in sessions be kept private and confidential?

Yes, safety and privacy is key in a trusted relationship and anything you discuss in Susan's office will be kept strictly confidential.
